I'm deeply torn on my opinion on this book. Half of it I really quite enjoyed. The other half really irritated me. Half of it I really quite enjoyed. The other half really irritated me. But I couldn't skim the half I disliked because it was often tightly wound into the SF parts I was enjoying. That being said I actively did look for the sequel while I was in a bookstore today - I just couldn't recall the author's surname (I was looking under 'D' for Doria, which I did remember).

I think the book picked up pace significantly in the latter stages. It started off at a leisurely pace but built momentum in somewhat jarring steps. Key character introductions were detailed; crew selection was desperately convenient, with a couple of additions who weren't terribly fleshed out; preparation whizzed by in a few pages. Arrival reset to a pace suitable for details. Things got interesting at this point... only to be hauled forwards in time for brief interludes.

These brief interludes were necessary to explain the open discoveries, pealing back layers gradually, slowly, towards the full pay-off at the end of the book when (mostly) everything was explained. Not all was as it seemed initially, that much was obvious throughout, but how things ended up at that point would require patience from the reader. I'm really not sure I like this style of revealing the ending, before hopping back 'two days earlier' like you'd see on predictable TV.

The final parts of the book then suddenly rushed past all of a sudden. Perhaps my favourite part of the book, about the gardening for those that have read this already, was barely a page or two. The 'away mission' parts of the story were very enjoyable, other than some of the discussions and general musings which veered into territories I had no interest in whatsoever.

And by the end of it, I still don't understand why Emilio's hands were in the state they were in, or exactly how he got home. A lot of the latter confusion was merely touched upon - there was enough to explain it all of course, but with insufficient detail for my tastes.

So it seems I do want to read the sequel but I was a bit put off by the pace of the first book's ending. Not sure I'm in rush to move to book two immediately.(less)

Tufty McTavish is on page 254 of 408 of The Sparrow: Not mad keen on the flitting between timelines - a television plot device that is terribly overused and causes me to grown out loud when it happens. Nor am I terribly keen on the religious aspect which seems to take up a lot of pages - something I'd rather skip over, but can't, because it's woven into just about everything. The crew selection process seemed convenient. Half-way through so I'll probably push through.
