Thanks, Gary. I went & listened to Sarah Palin's book-promotion interview with Oprah yesterday. Harpo Productions was having the YouTube postings deleted as I was watching them, but I saw most of it. Sounds interesting.

What is funniest about this book is the writers, portraying themselves as Christians and Mormons as non-Christians, blasting Mormons for believing wacky stories about Jesus Christ coming to North America and burying gold plates for Joseph Smith to find. Like that's less plausible than the Red Sea parting.

Thanks to my friend Trisha, who gave me the first American edition of this book. Can't say I agree with Lawrence entirely on his understanding of women, but he's trying.

This is the book that turned me onto Dreiser. I had to read it after I saw the film based on it, A Place in the Sun. I recommend the film as well.

I'm a huge Dreiser fan. I know he's not for everyone, but he reminds me a lot of F. Scott Fitzgerald in his bald portrayal of people's ambitions and shortcomings. He also looks at poverty and what it is, and perhaps in Dreiser's world poverty is not the same as being poor, since some of his wealthy characters are impoverished in their own ways--faddish, jaded, useless people, some of them, who contribute little or nothing to the society they seem happy to slash and crush in their petty, desperate crawl for the top.
