I was excited to read "To the Lighthouse" because it is mentioned as the favorite novel of one of the characters in "This is All: The Pillow Book of Cordeila Kenn." It may become a favorite of mine.
I don't think this book is for everyone... it might be lacking the obvious fast-paced action that some readers want, but for a dreamy, poetic person like me it's a perfect little novel. What I got from "To the Lighthouse"was enjoyment in the language details, and ideas about sense of place and passage of time. I tend to see life in the way Lily does- made up of days, memories, thoughts, and impressions of other people, and ultimately difficult to remember or understand, very mysterious. Recommended for readers who like a leisurely, relaxing novel told in beautiful prose, and especially for lovers of the ocean.

The idea behind the story is that Cordeila is compiling a book for her unborn daughter from diaries/writings about her life from the age 15. It tells of incidents of Cordeila growing up, falling in love for the first time, d dealing with life changes, befriending an English teacher who become her spiritual guide, etc....and in the proccess of describing events goes off into tangets about her thoughts about writing, books, people, sex, memory, friendship, Shakespeare, spirituality, and a lot more...as the title suggests the "all" that makes up her self. Cordeila is many things, funny and observant and sensitive and headstrong. She got on my nerves a few times, but won me over too, just like a real person.

I heard once that every good book you read should change your life. This book has definately done something to change my life, or at least my way of looking at it. I want to be more open to experiences, like Cordeila, to contradictions and layers. Reading about her teacher Julie adds to my desire to be an English teacher and just an interesting, spiritual person in general. And I want to meet someone who can be for me what Will is to Cordeila: a equal who loves me and expands my mind and my heart.
