Another book I listened to on CD. But the first one I've listened to that I'm also going to read the book of, as well. I now have a new favorite author. Cormac McCarthy. I read that McCarthy is widely considered to be the foremost and greatest living American novelist. I think this praise might actually be selling him short. The power, the raw stark naked emotion he can portray in words is breath taking. In listening to it, there were countless occasions that I replayed passages, not because I'd missed them, but because they were so beautifully written that I just had to hear them again. I was even brought to tears a few times. Not because the beauty or tragedy of the story, but because of the power of the language McCarthy used to express it. This book is an instant classic in my mind, and has jumped to the top of my favorites list.
It's been made into a motion picture now also (which I have yet to see) and I'm worried it may not translate well to the screen. The core of the story takes place in the main characters head. In both his dreams and his internal monologue is where the heart of the story lies. Both of which can be difficult to translate to film. However if they do half the job they did with "No Country for Old Men", it will be another winner.
Read this book! Read it twice! Then go read anything else by Cormac McCarthy. That is what I intend to do at least! ]]>

I would give it ZERO stars if that was an option! This book is a total waste of time. Yeah the concept seems cool, and it was on the clearance rack too so I figured what the heck, why not? Well, I know why not. Complete, worthless drivel. A book about a demon trapped in the book. In fact the book itself IS the demon. "Burn this book." That's the idea of the story. And it never lets you forget that. And there are no surprises, nothing of even mild interest. In fact, it's not even a particularly interesting demon. Actually, he sucks. He's a horribly lame and inept demon. Anyway, what you think at the very beginning of the book is going to happen at the end.... does. Yup, just what you think. Not a smidge of deviation. The only reason I bothered finishing it was it was short and wouldn't take too long. It didn't. But it was still a waste of time. I recommend it to NO ONE! In fact, I might actually do as the book requests, and BURN IT, so no one else will be tortured with it's inconsequenciality! (good word) ]]>
