<about>I love being a mom. My three great kids are now mostly grown, and have interesting lives and pursuits. Liesl, 23, is a great friend, sister, and homemaker. Karl, 21, is our techno-geek, everyone’s go-to guy. Katrina, 17, is our animal lover, and the one who stages the celebrations for the important events in our lives.

Growing up, my family lived in France. I’ve loved languages and cultures ever since. I've traveled a lot, and have lived/studied and/or worked in the US, France, Germany, England, Nigeria, and Israel.

When we were first married, I taught in Christian School, and my husband was the Jr/Sr HS science department. When the kids came, I stayed home full time and we homeschooled. After they had their foundations, I began work PT as a reference and children's librarian, the perfect job for me.

I'm a teacher by nature as well as by profession, but I've done other things as well. I have a degree in deaf education, because deafness is related to both language and culture. Most recently I taught Sign Language for interpreters at a local college, and HS French. Among other things, I’ve represented foreign students who come to study in America for a year. I also explore my artistic side when I can. In the summer of 2000, I started a life-size reproduction of the Bayeux Tapestry. A long-cherished dream is to one day be able to do the artsy stuff more full time.

As a family, we all love history, and watch a lot of historical fiction movies. I love to watch action flicks with my son Karl. With my daughters I like to watch girly movies, academy awards classics and old musicals.

Everyone loves to read. (Karl invited me to goodreads!)

Apart from my husband and the kids, my favorite companions are my cats.

At present I am teaching English as a Second Language to Middle School students, and loving every minute of it.

So that's about it for my current pursuits and quirks. Life is good. :)

</about>

I'm so glad I am reading this book. It is my first real view of the early development of the french colonies on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. I think the most fascinating aspect so far is how intertwined the "upper Louisiana" colonies were with the local native americans. There was true admirable if (on occasion) tentative interdependence among them. The French were generally not interested in farming, but rather in trapping, and in trading with the local natives. The indigenous tribes found this less invasive, more compatible with their way of life relative to the land, and a true interdependence developed over several generations. Intermarriage brought the first real expression of our American melting pot.
