It took me forever to read this book, which means: I didn't hate it. But, I didn't love it, either. Had I loved it, I would've read it as quickly as possible. I love the word pictures that Alice Sebold paints. The subject matter was just so very grim that I found it utterly depressing. Well-written, but depressing....less

This was an interesting book on the "working poor". Folks who work full time (usually more than full time) and the difficulty "getting by" on low or minimum wages.
The author moved around the country, Florida, Maine, and Minnesota and worked a variety of low paying jobs (waitress, maid, rest-home worker, Wal-mart employee). If not for her "real life" funds, she would not have been able to make survive on her wages, in most cases.
This book was interesting to me because it is pretty well-known that a lot of people working for large corporations are, essentially homeless. This book shows that it is NOT for lack of hard work; it is due to jobs that pay too little.
I once heard of a CEO getting an outrageous bonus (up in the millions) and looked up the number of employees that made minimum wage. IF the CEO had opted to take HALF of that enormous bonus and divvied the other half amongst the minimum wage workers, by my math, the lowest paid workers could've each gotten a $2 an hour increase. Just $80 more per week; $320 per month. Sometimes that is the difference between "making it" and not making it.
I admire CEOs who forgo the huge bonuses and pay their employees a fair wage. I was at a Human Resources seminar once and a consultant was there, talking about fair wages and put up a slide that outlined the differences between the employees at Sam's Club and COSTCO. The employees at COSTCO get paid much more than those at Sam's. COSTCO earns more per square foot and has less employee turnover. Also, COSTCO workers -when polled- had a higher level of satisfaction.
The book definitely gave me something to think about.

Anne Tyler is one of my favorite authors and she didn't disappoint. I really enjoyed this book which was about how two families meet while waiting at the airport to greet their new, adoptive babies flying in from Korea.
The way these two very different families "adopt" each other, as well as their new children was fascinating to me.
One family is Iranian, one very politically-correct-all-American. If you like Anne Tyler, I think you'll enjoy this book. Each chapter is told in another character's voice, which I really liked.

"This book was interesting; and there were a lot of fascinating anecdotes about crazy bosses, but it took a LONG time to get to its point and actual advice on how to deal with a different variety of crazy bosses.

This is the second of Robert's books that I've read. He's the older brother of my pal, Eddie, which is where I heard about Robert. This book made me laugh out loud. It is not only a bird's eye view from a teacher's perspective but some essay's on Robert's recollections of his own "school daze". Very funny, very irreverent (as the title states). I enjoyed it a lot. I've also been reading (via the worldwide web) Robert's monthly columns. His 1st book, DADDY NEEDS A DRINK is very irreverent -and funny, too....less

I don't know WHAT I expected with this book but it was nothing like what I expected.
Does that make sense? It is a tongue-in-chic (like the play on words) grrls 12-step program to understanding your own fabulousness; the fabulousness in other women and the fabulousness in "enlightened males".
More a humor book than self-help but the author does make some good points.
The most intriguing part about the book, to me, was the way she kept interspersing true-life history about women-behind-the-men (Einstein's wife; Mozart's sister, etc.)
I didn't hate it.
I didn't love it.
I'm not sorry I read it.
I don't think I'd read it again.
How's that for a wishy-washy review????...less

This book will not be everyone's cup of tea due to its metaphysical nature but, it was very inspiring to me, in my early 20's and it is funny how a lot of what I read in this book pop up in a lot of other books from "The Artist's Way" to Brian Tracy's "GOALS".
The ideas are: you are what you think; your thoughts can lift you up or drag you down; if you want it, imagine that it is yours and be amazed how the things you think about are drawn to you.
