I don't know what to say about this book, other than to say, it is what it is. It's my first Walter Mosley book, and, probably my last.
The author tells you a story, just the way it is. No suspense, no thrill. I wasn't compelled, I didn't want to find out what happened next, sometimes I didn't even want to turn the page. Worst of all, I couldn't relate to the main character, even come close to liking him, or want to find out what his fate would be. I was always the outsider, but I wanted to like this book.
I guess maybe, if you take a step back, the way it is written is in the black-and-white detective movie way, where the narrator gives you a running monologue of what is going on.
Lastly, this is the first book of the series, but in reading it I almost felt like there were 50 books preceding this one that gave a more thorough description of what happened in the past (that the main character constantly refers to) and more background/development of the secondary characters.
It was too dry for me. I am curious to know if Mosley's other books are like this as well.

If I could use one word to describe this book, it would be Drama. With a capital D.
The plot line is very well thought out.. if I could summarize it, it would go like this:
Bella - Edward I love you
Edward - I love you too Bella
Bella - sex sex sex
Edward - marriage marriage marriage
Jacob - Bella I love you
Bella - Edward
Jacob - Bella
Bella - Edward
Victoria - Bella .. blood
Bella - Edward or Jacob?
Edward - marriage
Bella - marriage
Alice - woohoo!
ugh. Infuriating. I'm told the fourth one sums this one up... it can't be more melodramatic than this book, can it? Seriously? All this talk of marriage and sex and relationships and, inadvertently religion (which is not outwardly mentioned, but is so bloody obvious) is driving me nuts.
Lastly.. I actually like Wuthering Heights. There's no need to ruin it by associating it with this book.

I can't say the book was amazing, and it didn't address all the feminist points that the author aspired to address (at least according to the inside cover), but it was a well written book. The alternating chapters (once one girl, the next the other girl) do help to build up action a bit, but I find it too disjointed for my tastes; at times, focusing on one storyline versus switching straight to another would have made this book a bit better. But overall, it was still an enjoyable read.

My 12th Kathy Reichs book (hah).
I have to say that overall it wasn't a bad read. The only thing that kind of irritated me was that 1/4 of the way into the book I was screaming at the main character, "It's them! Come on, clue in! It's them!", but it wasn't only towards the very end that the protagonist saw it. I don't know whether Kathy Reichs meant for it to be this way, but at the very least I wanted to finish reading the book because I wanted Temperance (the protagonist) to realize what I knew for 200 pages!
