One of the best books that I have read in a long time. Blending the quirky, contemporary style of writers like Jonathan Safran Foer with the heartbreak of any classic coming-of-age story, THE BOOK THIEF is a tale about a girl growing up in Nazi Germany during WWII... and she happens to steal books. Death serves as the narrator and provides some of the most simple and profound statements about humanity that I have ever read. More adult than young adult, THE BOOK THIEF follows in the tradition (like HIS DARK MATERIALS, etc.) of "children's" books being among the most original, powerful, and complex in today's market. Novels like this make me excited and hopeful for the entire book industry.
Filled with vivid characters, beautifully-- sometimes excruciatingly-- rendered descriptions, and a compelling story, this is a book that haunts you long after you read the final words. ]]>
