This was not bad.
I read The Rats in The Walls , The Dunwich Horror, and The Music of Erich Zann... I can see the reasons for all the high praise , and the comparisons to Poe; what Lovecraft brings to the Horror genre is incomparable BUT.... I have to admit, I got a bit bored at times. There were points, in the Dunwich Horror especially , that were verbose and seemed to go on and on. I do remember looking to see how many pages were left to the story. I guess thats a bad thing yet overall I'd still rate the story high in terms of originality , creepiness and the "what happened next" page turning factor. Lovecraft has his style and I think that once you get used to it and its rhythm, you'll enjoy it ( If you are into the macabre). However, reading one story after another in this particular compilation became tedious.
Neil Gaiman is the one who put me on to Lovecraft, and I can definitely see the similarities in their work. After I read American Gods, I made a point to bookmark Lovecraft . I'm glad I did :-) Shout out to you Neil, THANKS!!!
I'd just say to give another compilation a try, this was a little weak. I personally would have liked more background on when each story was written , where Lovecraft was when he wrote it, that sort of thing..
When I go back to read more Lovecraft I'll definitely pick up a different version. ]]>
