I think he overwhelms you with words, I can't think of a current book in which I've seen such description. I usually go through good books in one sitting or two, but this took me almost 4 days to get through. In the beginning it was hard to get through an hour of this book. I didn't care about the characters and it seemed like a random conglomerate of races in the city without any explanation as to why there were cacti and giant ants running around. As I was reading, I never got a good sense of the world I was in. Honestly I think there wasn't a point to the book. It was over 600 pages, that story could have been told in 300-400.

It felt like an eternity to get through this book. None of it seemed believable. I thought James tried too hard with the dialogue- it felt forced or overly eager to impress, it didn't give me the right historical vibe in the way Jemma conversed with some of her peers. I just didn't feel any connection between the characters. What irked me the most was how "well" Jemma handled her husband's infidelity. Maybe a mistress is something one can flippantly bring up into every day conversation 9 years after it happened. I felt it was a really big tease, they were husband and wife and nothing happened until 2/3 of the way into the book!

On the whole I like the Meredith Gentry series more than Anita Blake. It's been years since I read Mistral's Kiss, I was kind of bored with that book. I'm glad I started back up again, a lot of events happened to move the story forward that I actually want to read Swallowing Darkness. My only complaint is that just like after a certain point in the Anita Blake series, Hamilton crams all these happenings in the span of a day. The opening chapters where they are being questioned by the lawyers seemed way too drawn out.

I just didn't like it. It was a combination of M. Night Shymalan's movie The Happening with being on the run and people dying, and it was like a Grapes of Wrath where the Great Depression was an apocalypse but without the transcendentalism.
