After reading THE PEARL, by John Steinbeck, I realized it was an interesting novella. In fact, hats off to Steinbeck for his extraordinary writing style and vivid word choice! However, this novel could have been greatly improved. Even though the advanced areas, such as dynamics, were very well expressed, the basics needed to be enhanced. I think it only deserved a 4 or 5/10, to be generous.
Ideally, ninety pages were not enough to make a clear, concise plot. The story needed to emphasize the dramatic (significant) scenes, such as when Coyotito, Kino’s infant son, was shot by a hunter from the bottom of a mountain. After that tragic event, it was inevitable that the pearl was truly “evil.” Despite Kino’s efforts to make his life better using the pearl, it turned out to be fatal. That scene, along with many others, was crucial to establish the mood, tone, emotion, and most importantly, the message.
Although the main lesson was meant to teach children about how greed and avarice can lead to dire consequences, it was very indecisive. I felt this was obscured throughout the story, and the basic plot would have made more sense if I had known about it earlier in the book, rather than at the end. Also, I sense the wrong lesson was shown. I have perceived the story (moral in a sense) as a poor man striving and struggling, but continuing to lose. An analogy would be one step forward, two steps back. I understand Steinbeck is NOT a fan of HAPPY ENDINGS, but he can only go so far with the story to ensure the right lesson is projected at the reader. I felt Steinbeck went too far, and he made the ending unsatisfying for the reader.
I see where Steinbeck is trying to go with this; however the purpose seemed very indecisive and my overall feelings of THE PEARL were not satisfied. Although there were some strong points, majority of the book could have been better. I felt slightly disappointed with John Steinbeck and his novella. From the entertainment and pure amusement view, this novella is actually satisfying. Yet, through an analytical and purposeful view, this is not the book to read. I would recommend this for readers who have some free time on their hands.
The Pearl, written by John Steinbeck, is full of deep emotion and realistic situations. I enjoyed reading this book, and I believe that Steinbeck has an extraordinarily vivid writing style. I have never read a book in which an author can explain and describe as much about the scenery and characters as this one. Although published in 1949, The Pearl still reaches out to readers everywhere, and explains an important moral that will always be a vital part of life.

Taking place near the Gulf of Mexico, this book tells the story of Kino, a poor pool diver who struggles to support his wife, Juana, and his baby son, Coyotito. When Coyotito is stung by a poisonous scorpion and becomes extremely ill, Kino must find a pearl beautiful enough to pay for the sick baby’s treatment. With a stroke of luck, he discovers the “pearl of the world”, as large as a seagull’s egg. Kino is filled with joy for the luxurious future of his family and the now possible cure for his son, but with a treasure comes greed, and joy soon turns into mistrust and betrayal.

Overall, The Pearl is a great novel that is suitable for young teens and older. My favorite part of this book is how Kino slowly and gradually becomes more protective and obsessed with the pearl rather than overjoyed and proud. It seems that only Steinbeck could make this transformation possible in words. Just as I have, I believe that anyone who tries reading The Pearl will get drawn into it almost immediately.
(less)
