Always love the heroines in Robin McKinley's novels, and the main character, Sunshine, in this one is such a unique young woman. Her independence, her baking skills, her inner honesty, her salty disposition, her budding magic skills discovered as the novel progressed, as well as the warm cast of family and community friends who hang out at the bakery cafe where she works really drew me into the story. But the character who fascinated me was the cold, reluctantly sympathetic vampire with whom Sunshine becomes unwillingly embroiled. He reminds of Dexter, from the HBO tv series, a sociopath serial killer who comes to develop feelings and relationships with humans, against all odds and self-knowledge. I enjoyed reading about the vampire who develops feelings and learns to relate to humans. Love it, love it. Only sad that now I have to wait for another Patricia Briggs novel. I'm not a fan of the vampire genre, in spite of having recently glommed the entire Stephanie Meyer series. But I am a fan of Pat Briggs writing and strong characters, and boy does Mercedes Thompson stand out as one of the most interesting, well-developed, strong female characters ever created. This series is only remotely like the Anita Blake ones - the characters are more fully developed, links between the "species" complex but fascinating to untangle, and the ongoing storylines from book 1 to 4 are still well maintained and each has its twists. Loved this book. The voice of the 14 year old narrator was so clear, so lyrical, but told a story of such loss, love and longing that I didn't want the book to end. Reminded me of Alice Hoffman, especially in the parts about teenage love and craziness. The only thing I didn't like was the suddenness of what happens at the end of the novel, like it was tacked on for a quick resolution.
