The book I have lacks a glossary. In time, I've wondered about the publisher's motivation to leave out reference to the Nadsat-slang of the narrator. I'll probably never know why, but I thank him.

Being deprived of the opportunity to constantly interrupt my reading to look up Russian vocabulary, the semantics came to me naturally. It felt more like sinking into a hot bath than navigating an opaque dialect.

I've developed profound affection for Alex's voice. The mind of a sociopath, he interprets the vivid and sensual violence he inflicts in abstract and intensely beautiful rhetoric. I'm not especially interested in the story; I keep this book around for the rich prose. It's like chocolate for the linguist.

When I opened up this book and began to read Burgess' narrative, I was completely and utterly lost. When I closed this book, I was completely and utterly amazed.

An early turn-off in "A Clockwork Orange" is the dialect of the narrator, Alex, who uses a set of nadsat slang that any modern reader is likely to find confusing at first. However, readers, don't just put the book down--read on, and soon you'll find yourself understanding the words, and the experience becomes much more rewarding (yes, I would advise against using a guide to the words so that you can get the most out of the book).

Part of the genius of Burgess' novel is in the voice of it's narrator, Alex. However, there is strength elsewhere in the novel's solid plot. Burgess' novel examines a character study of a young boy who, essentially, has his freedom of choice removed in an attempt to "reform" him.

I really don't want to say a lot more, other than this is definitely worth a look at for the great style of writing and the story itself. It will really make you consider... are we willing to sacrifice free will to eradicate "evil"?(less)

The biggest obstacle for finding a quality beauty product is interpreting the glossy marketing which generates most of the cost. Begoun helped me develop a healthy skepticism and got me into the habit of reading the back label before the front.

Once I realized every bottle of goo is made up of mostly water and promises, I was willing to let go of all the pathos and begin to understand what I'm buying. The book begins with a broad spectrum chapter designed to educate about the powerful psychology behind beauty marketing, the language designed to persuade, and some explanation about how skin works and what it needs to be healthy and beautiful.

Begoun has made a reputation of being a really tough sell. Her product reviews are brutal and concise, with clear overarching standards on the quality of the active ingredients as well as the practical ease of use. She's quick to point out claims which lack credible support.

This book is frequently updated online as well as in print. While I don't think of it as an out-and-out investment, I consider both worthy companions that help me make confident shopping decisions.
