One of the best Christmas books I have read!
This follows the story of Hope Jensen, who was abandoned in a fast food restaurant and found and adopted by Louise Jensen. She has a wonderful relationship with her adopted mother and has high hopes of being a successful news reporter. When her mother dies of cancer and her apartment is broken into on Christmas Eve, she is left a mysterious jar filled with coins and bills. Her reporter's instincts tell her there must be a story here. She finds other people who have been given the same surprising gift at times in their lives when they needed it. She pursues the family that began this tradition and finds a heart-warming story and a wonderful family that has taken her into their lives under false pretenses. As Hope finds out the mystery of the Christmas Jars, she will also solve some mysteries in her own life.

Set in Communist Russia between the two World Wars, this book follows the journey of Sofia, an escapee from a work camp, as she desperately looks for someone to save her friend Anna from certain death at the camp.
Anna is dying in the work camp and Sofia, her good friend, escapes to find the one person she thinks cares enough about Anna to save her from the work camp, Vasily, Anna's childhood love. SHe travels to the village of Tivil and meets Mikhail Pashin their, who she believes is Vasily. However as she begins to fall in love with Mikhail, her guilt over her presumed betrayal of Anna increases. Meanwhile Aleksei, the chairman of the town of Tivil is trying to discover Sofia's past which she desperately wants to keep hidden. Add in a mystical gypsy and a group of people dedicated to saving the town, and you have a fast-paced, full of action.
