"I said it for Kenny and the Dragon and I'll say it again here: DiTerlizzi's storytelling is like fantastical spectres--appealing from a distance, but get up close and there's nothing to hold onto." Aug 06, 2014 04:52AM

Steph Su is on page 122 of 321 of Sharp Objects: While Gone Girl was a Da Vinci Code-esque fast-paced thriller read for me, I think I'm going to relate to Sharp Objects much more: the protagonist with the painful history and minefield family relationships, the utterly inexplicable viciousness of teenage girls, the pros and cons of living in a small town and knowing everybody's business.

Brenna Yovanoff
“It wasn't like the other songs. There was no story, no conversation. This was just the feeling, without words or pictures, and it had nothing to do with Luther or his clean, stinging guitar. It was the sound of being outside, of being alien. It was the pulse that ran under everything and never let you forget that you were strange, that the world hurt just to touch.”
Brenna Yovanoff, The Replacement

Juliet Marillier
“Man sets his hand to games of power and influence, he quests for far horizons and wealth beyond imagining. He thinks to own what cannot be possessed. He hews the ancient trees to broaden his grazing lands; he mines the deep caves and topples the standing stones. He embraces a new faith with fervor and, perhaps, with sincerity. But he grows ever further from the old things. He can no longer hear the heartbeat of the earth, his mother. He cannot smell the change in the air; he cannot see what lies beyond the veil of shadows. Even his new god is formed in his own image, for do they not call him the son of man? By his own choice he is cut adrift from the ancient cycles of sun and moon, the ordered passing of the seasons. And without him, the Fair Folk dwindle and are nothing. They retreat and hide themselves, and are reduced to the clurichaun with his little ale jug; the brownie who steals the cow's milk at Samhain; the half-heard wailing of the banshee. They become no more than a memory in the mind of a frail old man; a tale told by a crazy old woman.”
Juliet Marillier, Child of the Prophecy

Octavia E. Butler
“You are hierarchical. That's the older and more entrenched characteristic. We saw it in your closest animal relatives and in your most distant ones. It's a terrestrial characteristic. When human intelligence served it instead of guiding it, when human intelligence did not even acknowledge it as a problem, but took pride in it or did not notice it at all... That was like ignoring cancer.”
Octavia E. Butler

Jo Walton
“I love the train. Sitting here I feel connected to the last time I sat here, and the train to London too. It is in-between, suspended; and in rapid motion towards and away from, it is also poised between. There's a magic in that, not a magic you can work, a magic that's just there, giving a little colour and exhilaration to everything.”
Jo Walton, Among Others

Jenny Downham
“I want a big dark room you can barely move in, with bodies grinding close together. I want to hear a thousand songs played incredibly loud. I want to dance so fast that my hair grows long enough to trample on. I want my voice to be thunderous above the throb of bass. I want to get so hot that I have to crunch ice in my mouth.”
Jenny Downham, Before I Die
