Actually, I am digging it, but not yet done, almost...i like the pacing of it, it's so unhip in a sense to have it be slow, though I can see how it the leisurely unwinding might also sometimes feel pretentious, self-conscious, but overall I dig. Amazingly, I never read Anne Frank's diary -- I guess I never had to in school (I remember we had to read Night, though I cannot recall a thing about it; later I read Primo Levi's Survial and Reawakening, which really, after that there is no reason to read any other Holocaust stories, imo). Anyway, though, I read this for work because I interviewed Francine PRose on her new book about the diary and its literary merit. What struck me was how much this is a book about adolescence and maturation, of course with this unfathomably tragic cloud darkening everything. It's also hard to say you don't like such a book - it seems a bit coldhearted and un-p.c., though I did like it, so I guess that's not a problem right now.
