I wanted to keep reading this book much like people can't stop watching an auto accident, Jerry Springer, or wrestling. I just knew I was going keep asking myself why I read the thing, but bless her heart, Klein really seems to believe what she writes. She compares shock therapy of the '50s with the free-market Capitalist idea of wiping out a region so they can march, or should I say high-step, in to remake the region for corporate interests (ie greed). Klein goes after Milton Friedman, champion of Lassez-Faire Capitalism. She tries to make the claim that Friedman's economists (the Chicago Boys) love disasters because that gives them a clean slate to go in and set up their free-market Capitalism (which we all know according to Klein is evil and bad). If there aren't any good ones around (tsunami, Katrina) they'll just have the government make some (Iraq, Chile).
Anyone who has studied Friedman and Lassez-Faire theory should know that they want zero government interference. That includes invading countries and starting/supporing revolutions. Friedman was against the Iraq War.
Why did I even bother to read the book if I knew I was going to disagree with it? I promised my sister-in-law I'd read it. I at least gave it 2 stars because Klein does seem to have a vivid imagination which I think is important when writing a book. Unfortunately, she still thinks her writing is non-fiction.
