-King advocates using the first word that comes to your mind when your writing, and avoiding adverbs, "ly" words, and the overuse of attribution words, "Please," Sally cajoled. The best form is SAID.
-Healthy mind, healthy marriage-writing gives you stability.
-King listens to AC/DC, Guns and Roses, and Metallica when he writes.
-Tell the truth, (even more important than writing what you know), and write what you love to read.
-Don't write for profit
-People love to read about people at work.
-If you tell a story that people know-flip it-spousal abuse? women beating man-that sort of thing.
-don't be a control freak, let your characters grow
-don't plot-let the story grow
-plotting too much makes writing too stiff, artificial, and mechanical-it's anti-creative.
-have an idea of your story, but don't make characters do things your way.
-try throwing characters in situations and then doing backstory-find the best situation to throw them in to start the story you want to tell...still reading so will add more!
-good stories end up about people/they can start out flat-in a situation, but they have to grow
-your story is like a fossil you are digging up. Symbolism and theme are the bells and whistles-if they don't go with the story, don't put them in to make it artificial.
-King believes in doing two drafts and a polish-3 revisions and keeping the pressure gong on the first draft-writing fast w/ the door shut-getting your thoughts down.
-King believes in not showing anyone your draft until the second draft is finished and waiting for a minimum of 6 weeks before starting the second draft so that you can view the story with fresh eyes. He advocates reading your book in one sitting, and working on shorter projects in between revisions
-If everyone thinks you have a problem, you have a problem-listen to your test audience/ideal reader. They must be able to prickle w/ recognition.
-Read and practice writing a lot-use the locale/texture
-Read descriptions in your genre to see how fast and what style they dump it in.
-Backstory belongs in the back/brief/intense-don't overwrite-keep it interesting-see clearly-write clearly/see it/write it. Swear if you must-if that gives it realism. Get it out gracefully adn fast
-dont' confuse or leave your reader out. let it unfold at its own pace, but don't make them restless or bored by a scene.
-look for too much pointless talk, or under/over explanation
-if you can watch someone read your book, watch where they stop reading and take notes-or ask what parts they skipped/skimmed over.
-be grateful for any rejection letters with advice or notes-they are truly valuable
-With every story 10% of it is cut-able/collapsible.
-flashbacks=boring and corny.
-for backstory check out Harry Potter-backstory/everyone has a history and most of it isn't interesting-stick to the story
-research belongs in the back-don't bore people/stick to the characters
-King is doubtful of writing classes/says writing seminars/feedback isn't helpful-you need Specific feedback
too much creative energy is used to explain and it can give you writer's block from too much criticism. They offer stimulating conversation and could put you in touch with agents, but that's about it.
