This amazing book brings together the short novel that gives the book his name, and six more fantastic short stories. Each of them a masterpiece on their own,all of them world famous. It's hard for me to pick a favorite from this collection,or from any other by Garcia Marquez,he's just such a good and powerful writer,a magician. I really enjoy and love the ending for the story "Blacaman el bueno, vendedor de milagros",I thought I was reading something from "The Arabian Nights". And that's the feeling you get after reading it,the magical realism, the miracles, the legends that come alive each time Marquez takes a pen.Even the titles are awesome: "Un senor muy viejo con unas alas enormes", "El ahogado mas hermoso del mundo", "Muerte constante mas alla del amor","El mar del tiempo perdido", "El ultimo viaje del buque fantasma". A classic of world literature!

A wonderful and brilliant introduction to the life and work of Franz Kafka by David Mairowitz and with awesome illustrations by the legendary Robert Crumb. In less the 200 pages it awoke my appetite to read all the wonderful writing of Kafka, and to get into a more profuond and complete book about the life of this genius of world literature. The man who wrote the most famous first sentence in modern literature: "As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning after disturbing dreams,he found himself transformed in his bed into an enormous bug." - The Metamorphosis. And also wrote the second most memorable first line in modern literature: "Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K.,for without having done anything wrong he was arrested one morning." - The Trial. An exemplary introduction, little short of inspired, most recommended to everybody that loves literature!

"The Bad Girl" by Vargas Llosa is an amazing love story about a man who falls deep in love with a girl the moment he met her when they are kid. A girl who would be his joy and his pain throught all his life, who would be coming in and out of his life again and again. Beautiful written, the book ask what's the true face of love? Ricardo's love for the bad girl is one of this faces, for love has many. Just as Garcia Marquez has "Love in the time of Cholera",his wonderful take on love, this one is Vargas Llosa's take on this universal theme,a love that take us from one side of the earth to the other, from Peru to Paris to London,Tokio,Madrid,...to the deepest places of the heart. A pleasure to read, with the magical touch of Vargas Llosa, one of the best writers in the world, and one of the few who deserve to win the Nobel Price of literature!

This is such a heartbreaking and beautiful book, the best comin-of age novel I've read so far. The prose is breathtaking, and the characters are so real and alive, they get under your skin. I fell in love with all of them, but above all with Raj,Annie, and Lew. When I finish reading the last page,it was sad to realize how a group of adults destroy the mental, phisical, and spiritual innocence of a kid,in this case Lew,the hell he went in his everyday life, getting no help from his doctor or his dad, finding a little peace and refuge only with his friends. The novel is a long chain of dark secrets from one character to another, everyone got one,a secret desire, obsession, that by the end of the book blows the reader's mind away. A novel full of emotions and hope. The ending is sublime,to see Raj and Annie survive and escape this disfuntional town where they grew up,of course with scars, and start a new life,a new chapter, that by the end of the last line, you know, you feel, you hope, that everything will be ok at last. And where Raj is on his way of becoming the perfect man,a good man,a single good man in the world! An awesome novel!

A beautiful and gentle novel about the fictionalized life of Daisy Stone Goodwill,a woman in search of herself,of her place in the world. Beautifully written,...with the touch of the magical realism of the latinamerican writers like Gabriel Garcia Marquez,Isabel Allende,Gioconda Belli, and Horacio Quiroga, the book is a wonderful description of the inner life of his protagonists, above all of Daisy interior life. There are so many unforgetables moments, tenders, sad, magicals, that will leave you breathless. Carol Shields has secure a place for herself in the shelf of world literature with this stunning novel!

One of the best fantasy books I've read in a long time, beautiful and daring. The heroine Phedre no Delaunay reminds me of Mata Hari, for she too is a spy and is an expert in the arts and talents of the bedchamber, the art of sex. Beautiful and sensual prose,a work of wonder,in the same stature of Tanith Lee'work. I couln't stop reading, and this one is only volume one in a new epic and magical serie. Can't wait to read the next volumes,...
