FINALLY!!! I made it through #17, Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray". I think that is the longest it has ever taken me to finish a book. No matter... I've decided to do some easy reading for my next several selections. I've already read them, but not this year, so I guess it counts!
#18 down...
Janette Oke's "Love Comes Softly",

... now on to #19, Janette Oke's "Love's Enduring Promise". I am going to make it!

I honestly don't mind loaning out books... chances are, they're just sitting on my bookshelves, waiting for somebody to take them out anyhow. My problem is with being the borrower. I like to really USE my books. I'll bend the spine, dog- ear the pages... and since I read all day every day and everywhere, I invariably spill something on it, leaving a stain. I'm of the school that a book isn't quite a book until it's been broken in. However, not everybody feels that same way, and I try to be respectful of that. So, instead of borrowing their books, I buy cheap used/ out of print ones. After all...

"Neither a borrower nor a lender be, for oft the loan loses itself and friend"

Not the best read ever, but no the worst by far. Unfortunately, I felt completely bored for the first 100 pages or more... it doesn't actually pick up until the last 75 pages or so. There really wasn't very much plot to it. Every other paragraph was a tangent about Greko Roman mythological characters that, in the end, didn't add to the book one iota.
I am utterly baffled by my dislike of Dorian... one of my all- time favorite plays: The Importance of Being Earnest. I felt like I was wading through a mental swamp most of the time I was reading this work. However, should anybody ask me if I would recommend it... I would. It's a classic. Besides, there are some people who enjoy superfluous monologues about nothing and anything (why else would anybody read the first 20 pages of The Scarlet Letter).
If asked to truthfully describe my feelings about this work, it could be summed up as: EH?

In that society, at that time, a man was the ultimate in any relationship. A woman was forced to cede control to her husband. If she married a man, he would be the one running the country... not her. That is, if she wanted to be what was considered a good wife. If they'd just had a sexual relationship, no marriage, he would have power over her because it could be deemed a form of treason for the Queen to have a sexual relationship outside of marriage. If she wanted to keep that hidden, she would be at his mercy. It isn't like she could change these laws that were already in play... she was, after all, just a woman. A woman, no matter how intelligent or powerful, was held to the limits of her sex (at the time).
