Showalter manages to pack a lot of plot into Intertwined, without sacrificing characterization. Let's call this Heart & Soul (that Robert Downey Jr. film) meets Nightworld. Great fun, but I think I'll just check the sequel out from the library. I don't see myself reading this one repeatedly. ]]>

I'm a sucker for fairytales, and Beastly is wonderfully romantic, modern take on Beauty and the Beast. What sets Beastly apart from, say, Robin McKinley's Beauty is that it's told from the Beast's point of view -- and there's no doubt that Kyle Kingston was very worthy of having such a curse place on him! His transformation from boy to beast, from jerk to nice-guy is fully realized; Flinn doesn't just skip to the romance. And, if one believes in magic, one could definitely see something like this happening at a posh Manhattan prep school. Great fun!
Beastly has been nominated for this year's Beehive Award -- an annual award given out by the Children's Library Association for the best children's and young adult fiction. ]]>

Catching Fire sucked me in from the first page, and although it's been a few months since I read The Hunger Games, it was unbelievably easy to reconnect with the world Collins created, which is often not the case with sequels. I loved reading the post-game interactions between Katniss and Haymitch. Those two characters absolutely sparkle whenever they're on the same page (even better when Peeta's with them.)
That said, I have to admit my expectations were a little unreasonable and kept me from loving this book as much as I normally would have. That's the problem with sequels to books that blew you out of the water: there's absolutely nothing they can do to live up. I could set this book down and go to sleep at a reasonable hour -- The Hunger Games kept me up all night. That's the difference between a four-star and a five-star review in my book. ]]>
