Mandatory reading for every fiction writer, and written so well, you'll want to read it in one sitting! Ms. Benedict has scoured the literature to come up with illustrative examples to show the difference between writing about sex and writing porn, and to show how lovely writing adds to the manuscript and becomes part of its very fiber (and is something you COULD show your mother!) How did I manage before I read this book?

Lyrical writing, with beautiful scenery, but the source of the protagonist's angst was a long time coming, and it wasn't at all what you thought it would be based on the initial memories--I felt as if I'd been manipulated. It also felt the other man on the lake was underused/underdeveloped, and leaving the ending in the past was unsatisfying. It left me without a satisfactory resolution for the present protagonist's situation (even if that was just to ask another question). So while there was much to enjoy about the book, there were disappointments, too, and too quote an American Idol judge, "It was just OK for me."

Disappointing. Although the secondary character, Lisbeth Salander, is incredibly well-wrought, the book started slowly with what amounted to pages and pages of dossiers and I found myself impatient with the scenes that didn't include this colorful character. Yes, this book is a wonderful commentary on violence against women. Yes, the mystery is imaginative and not predictable. Yes, the character Lisbeth is different than any I've read before. But, did the book take me away and have me turning pages breathlessly from start to finish? No. I kept waiting for it to get as good as everyone said it was, and it never did. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more had it not been sandwiched between Garth Stein's THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN and Kathryn Stockett's THE HELP.

Although the dialect is overdone for my tastes, the story is so well-wrought, I would read the book in pig-latin if necessary. An amazing debut for this author.
