The Wednesday Letters is a heartwarming story of a family struggling through a trying time and finding their way. For years, Jack and Laurel Cooper have owned a B&B in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The story begins at the end of their lives when tragedy takes them both on the same evening. Shocked, their children return home to say goodbye and find themselves in the same place for the first time in two years. Their initial discomfort is quickly dispelled when they discover their father's Wednesday Letters to their mother. While learning the story of their parent's lives, they slowly discover more about themselves than they ever cared to know and in the process heal wounds that none of them were even aware they possessed.
Wright's book was beautifully written and full of emotion. From the first page, the emotion is palpable and I was immediately drawn into Jack and Laurel Cooper. Our brief acquaintanceship with them is enough to make us love their vivid characters and their children's mysteries kept me reading well into the night. The writing flows smoothly and the storyline is predictable but thoroughly enjoyable offering a bit of romance coupled with the mild mysteries. Rough Country, the third book in the Virgil Flowers series, was a fantastic fun read. Virgil Flowers is on vacation fishing a tournament in Northern Minnesota when a call comes in from Lucas Davenport. A body has been found floating in a nearby lake and it requires their attention. Virgil heads off begrudgingly only to discover that the body is a wealthy woman who was staying at a women's only resort with a reputation for relaxed sexuality. Upon further investigation, Virgil uncovers information that the victim is not the first person tied to the resort to have been murdered and also that both of these victims have ties to a local band. With Flowers digging deeper and more murders occurring in the wake of the investigation, this case needs to be closed quickly and in a manner that only he can make happen.
Davenport's new series is still unique and entertaining. Flowers is still the best detective in Minnesota and his efforts to solve cases are different from any other character you will come across in a book. His nonchalant appearance and his humorous demeanor make him a joy to read about. The setting for this book was surprisingly different and the rural flair was well appreciated. The Eagle's Nest was a trap full of potential suspects and motives leaving me guessing at every turn. With the smooth wording and light pace, the story was so engrossing that the obvious motives and suspects seemed glossed over and I was kept questioning my suspicions to the very end of the book. Rough Country is a perfect rainy day afternoon read and I would highly recommend it to any readers out there who enjoy a good mystery.
