I just can't bring myself to give 5 stars to non-fiction - I can't imagine I'll ever like it that much.
But I did enjoy this and it was a pretty quick easy read with some interesting points. I am very much looking forward to talking to some of my friends who know more about China then I do. I am especially interested in his assertion that standardized testing is what caused China to stop inventing. i.e. they invented paper, gunpowder, etc. and then they introduced the imperial examinations and killed creativity - as the test stressed memorization and handwriting - I'm wildly paraphrasing but . . . Zhao is implying that a nationalized curriculum and NCLB tests will do the same to the USA. ]]>

I liked it but not as much as her werewolf books. I will be looking for the others in the series. I'm a little disappointed to see that they have different characters. I felt like this ended a little fast. I also would have like to have seen the romance developed a little more.
As always I appreciate that Briggs doesn't dwell on details of pain and torture. ]]>

I expected to like this a lot more. Maybe my expectations were too high. There were some nice puns and humor but it just seemed much too violent and bitter for the type of humor/fantasy/adventure that it seemed to be. ]]>

I remember loving this. It somehow showed up in my house in Niger. What I remember most is wishing I had a good dictionary because there was so much great vocabulary in it, but I wasn't really sure if some of the words weren't his own invention. I'll have to read it again now that I'm once again in the land of dictionaries. ]]>

This was another OneWorldLibrary book for children. And another great one. A very nice story about reincarnation. My kids are interested in religion at the moment so it is nice to find good stories like this. Be warned though that some people find it a tearjerker. My kids are still pretty clinical about death. ]]>

This is great. I loved the Haiku. And I loved the art. And I loved the lesson. But a warning - the Japanese Haiku on each page doesn't match the English haiku. I was confused until I got to the end and saw the Japanese translations. ]]>
