I remember reading this book as a kid--I even remember where it was shelved in the San Marco Library--so was eager to re-read the copy I bought at a local library book sale, library binding and all. It's not the most skillful of Andre Norton's books (it's a little heavy-handed with its depictions of good and evil and some of the folksy dialogue makes me cringe a bit), but it has some clever conceits. ]]>

This was an entertaining YA SF book, and a quick read (a couple of hours). Though our hero was a bit clueless in a couple of places (case in point: sure wish I could figure out what's strange about those strange, strange summer cottage neighbors...), William Sleator does his usual bang-up job of turning out a dark and interesting tale. Worth the couple of hours. ]]>

OK, this is now one of my all-time favorite kids' fantasy series (and that's saying a lot). This book, like the others, is well-written, intelligent, easy to read, really funny.... I could go on and on. This is what Harry Potter wishes it could be. I really enjoyed the last book in the series and I am so thrilled that it looks like Rick Riordan is planning another series along the same lines (though maybe with different characters). Fantastic, fantastic book in a fantastic, fantastic series. ]]>
This book made me want to go live, artsy and poor and happy, in Paris. In the 1920s. With Scott Fitzgerald and Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein.
The likelihood of this working out for me aside, I enjoyed reading Hemingway's recollections, even knowing they were likely greatly enhanced when he recalled them 30 years later. The man could achieve the sublime with simple sentences and straightforward prose. ]]>
