"The Book of Lies" is a solid read that ties the world's first murder as found in the Bible (Cain killing Abel), to the unsolved death of Mitchell Siegel, the father of the boy who created Superman.

Some people will read this setup and assume that "The Book of Lies" is a "The Davinci Code" clone in which a Biblical idea is given an alternate interpretation for dramatic purposes despite historical evidence to the contrary. However, the two novels are very different under the surface.

For one, Brad Meltzer is much more respectful of traditional religious ideas than Dan Brown was in his famous novel. Unlike Brown, Meltzer does not rely on scandel and misrepresentation of facts to entice readers. He simply tells a story between the facts, taking time at the end of the novel to note what was real and what was fictional.

Also, whereas "The DaVinci Code" focused on the secret history of the Church as its' main thrust, the driving force behind Meltzer's "The Book of Lies" is the relationship that fathers have with their sons. this makes for a more slow paced novel with less twists and turns but much more heart.

In the end, "The Book of Lies" was enjoyable. However, due to the subject matter I would say that lovers of comic books would enjoy it more than the average reader.

Grant Morrison is a legend among comic book writers. Whenever he's put on a book, it's sure to sell well.

And most of the time, I buy what he writes. I'm not sure why because it's very rare that I can make sense of his writing, much less enjoy it.

Make no mistake, Morrison has some great ideas. It's what he does best. But whenever I read a Morrison comic I feel as if the great ideas have hit the page with no structure to them. Ideas are piled onto ideas, "Wow" moment upon "Wow" moment. And make no mistake: These moments are golden. But it doesn't matter how good the moments are if they come together as an incohernt whole that leaves the reader wondering what the heck just happened.
