Resounding accuracy of the voice of a boy teetering on the brink of adulthood, goodreads? Um yeah, maybe if all kids teetering on the brink of adulthood made you question if they were autistic and spent the majority of their free time reading the classics and going to therapy. Don't get me wrong. This book is good. You want to find out what the deal is with the main character for the entire book and at the end, you eventually get a pretty damn good idea. But for the love, this is not the Catcher in the Rye for the 90s. And it's just unrealistic. You find out at the end why he is so weird, but the catch-22 about this book for me is that a kid with his kind of emotional issues probably never would have been able to experience the kind of social interaction he experiences and writes about throughout the book.

Bottom line, kids are mean, especially in HS, and they would have been mean to this kid if he was as odd as he portrays himself to be in the "letters" he writes. In the book, the big denouement is catalyzed when he finally makes out with a girl he's had a crush on the whole book. In real life, that girl never would have even spoken to him, let alone gotten to the point of making out with him.

Finally, there is a whole hippie vibe to this book that reminded me of a Wonder Years episode. You'd have no idea that it was supposed to take place in the early 90s if the diary entries hadn't been dated. The lack of relevant cultural references really bothered me. (less)

A humorous story about a boy frightened by a squeaky door at bedtime, and the animals that his grandma tucks into his bed in an attempt to comfort the boy. Makes a great read aloud. Kids especially love the animal sound effects.

  	Hi everyone!

I'm looking for some great read alouds that I can share with my preschool classes. Many of the students are English language learners, meaning they have a limited understanding of English. Any recommendations anyone?

Thanks,
Andres

A wonderfully written narrative of the tragedy that befell Christopher McCandless. Although the reader learns of the tragedy early in the book, I still considered the book a thrilling read as Krakauer slowly gives us more and more insight regarding McCandless' background including beliefs and motivations. With great skill, Krakauer vividly describes McCandless' western sojourn from the furthest parts of the southwest up until his fateful Alaskan journey that he had dreamed of carrying out. Although some might disagree with what McCandless stood for or his course of action, one cannot deny that he lived life on his own terms; he did what he wanted to do. He had a vision and pursued it with undying fervor. Many, if not most individuals, would be unable to say that.

John "Crash" Coogan lives to play football and he never comes in second. He is arrogant, superficial and concerned primarily with outside appearances and accomplishments. To Crash, Penn Webb is the epitome of uncool. He gets his clothes from second-hand stores, he's vegetarian, and he's a Quaker (he eats oat burgers) which means he doesn't believe in violence.
Crash and his best friend Mike love to make life miserable for Penn. It becomes clear that Crash is jealous of Penn and his closeness to his parents, a relationship Crash lacks with his. But when tragedy strikes the Coogan family, Crash slowly starts to realize that life is more important than wearing expensive clothes and sneakers, and being popular. What matters most is family and relationships . He also discovers that he and Penn are not so different after all.
I really enjoyed this book. It touched upon universal themes that many can relate to such as acceptance, old age, bullying, friendship, family, and yes, even nature.
When Crash's grandfather unexpectedly has a stroke, Crash unconsciously steps back and re-evaluates his life without even realizing he's doing it. Suddenly, his cool friends don't seem so cool anymore. Things that were once the most important in his life, become trivial. As a result of his grandfather's illness, Crash becomes more aware of the world around him and realizes there more important things in life than breaking records in football.

I can connect because Crash and his Grandfather were really close. My grandmother and I were really close too before she died. I felt really different without her. I changed a lot about myself and she was a role model to me like his grandfather was to him. This book can be related to many people and situations. Its a very common issue.

I would rate this book a 3.5 or 4 because I like who people can think about their personal experience.
