I felt that the book didn't prove all its points and that it wandered too far away on tangents in some sections, but it's an interesting look at politics and gender roles in Europe of the time. D'Eon's dual life as diplomat and spy even before he officially declared himself a woman is sometimes brainbending to read and most have been stressful to live. I was surprised by what the research shows about how women lived their lives and what some of them wrote about it.

Recently finished Ender's Game, having started bass-ackwards by reading Ender's Shadow (and Shadow of the Hegemon) first. I wonder if I would have found Ender more interesting if I'd read Ender's Game first, because with the way I did end up doing it, I prefer Bean by a wide margin. But maybe the order wouldn't matter, since Bean fits well within the boundaries of the kind of characters I'm drawn to.
Still, I'm enjoying all the books I've read so far and have whipped through them quickly. The books acknowledge that children don't feel like "children," they feel like people, and they usually know when they're being talked down to, and they're fully aware of how little power they're allowed. Adults can make a precocious child especially miserable. Children can be savage and brutal too, something often forgotten by some adult authors who smear a thick golden haze of fluffy innocence on their child characters.
From the backcover descriptions I've seen, I'm not sure if I want to follow Ender's stories any further, though I know I'll pick up the next book with Bean in it when it arrives.
The Ender's Game edition I read had an author's introduction that made me never want to meet Orson Scott Card, who comes off as very superior and heaps scorn on people and ideas he disagrees with. Despite the brevity of the introduction, he goes after a lot of targets....
And, Mr. Card, I pity Ender as well as identify with him. He gets worked over by a wide range of people. In the end it's for the perceived good of humanity, yes, but it's still awful what's done to him. If you would scorn me for it, I really don't care.

The art is still beautiful, but I miss the way Michael Whelan's Works of Wonder showed what the final cover looked like.
I find his commissioned artwork more interesting than most of his original work, also shown here. For me, he tends to recycle his symbols and elements too much. Though I've noticed that in the years since this book was published some of the art he originally did only for himself became covers for some books, mostly anthologies.

I love that this book shows what the publishers put together as the final cover in addition to Michael Whelan's original full art. For the wrap-around book covers, it shows you how Whelan had to consider his composition and place his elements.
In the case of the cover for Mirror of her Dreams, there's a bit where Michael Whelan notes that the ducks he placed in the wallpaper have a symbolic meaning while the reader sees that the publisher cropped out all the wallpaper in the final cover. That had a big impression on me.
