i'll leave the rating for later, but so far i'm enjoying it enough that it's keeping me from doing the class reading i should do. i've read stories about the world series of poker, val kilmer, and right wing talk radio, and each has made me want to play poker, watch val kilmer films, and listen to right wing talk radio, respectively.

all of the reviews on this shelf are tentative, until i read them for my course and see what discussion and context do for them. that said:

i find this book rather tedious. anderson's efforts to color in many corners of small town american life at the end of the 19th century are respectable, but the stories are quite formulaic, and read the same as the last after a while. i'm also irritated by the presence of the novel's protagonist - who is almost definitely an abstraction of the author - in each story, as someone whose personality is magnetic to all those around him, while everyone else struggles with their hardscrabble lives.

perhaps the best (worst) indictment: i only have 20 pages left to read and i can hardly bring myself to do so.

i read this for a course i've yet to take, so i'm yet unaware of the context in which i will re-read it. that said: this book is beautifully incoherent and obscene. i think what it does best is to (re)produce a sense of drugsickness in burroughs' prose. the narrative is near impenetrable, but provides substantial backbone for a world that emits illicit drugs and sex through its atmosphere.

actually, this review makes it seem a better book than i initially thought. but that might be the thing: it's a book that's more interesting to think about than it is to read.
