Ras al ghul is one of my favorite Batman villains. Often the stories involving Ras involve some mystery and detective work. That's why I found Batman: Ra's al ghul Year One truly disappointing. In reality it was just an overblown zombie story.
If you just have to read and buy every Batman Year One graphic novel, go ahead and pick it up, but wait until it is on sale. Save your money for Sandman Mystery Theatre. ]]>

Not counting the works of H.G. Wells or Jules Verne, Boneshaker was the first steampunk novel that I've ever read. While the first 70 pages or so felt achingly slow (I might chalk this up to sleep deprivation), the last four-fifths of the book were a fun, twisting, action-packed thrill ride, with likable, well-developed characters, both heroes and villains alike, mysterious gadgets, zombies, and enough suspense to keep most adrenaline junkies happy.
I liked the strong female lead, Briar Wilkes and her motherly sticktoitiveness, as well as Lucy O'Gunning, the one-armed bar owner, Jeremiah Swakhammer, the armor-wearing, six-shooter toting tough guy, the various air pirates and, of course, the heinous villain, Dr. Minnericht.
Cherie Priest show a great imagination and I look forward to her future steampunk installments.
I think my enjoyment of Boneshaker was heightened by my recent visit to Seattle and some of its major tourist spots, including the city's Underground Tour. I think my friends and I found the Underground Tour was the highlight of the visit to the city. The haunting (and perhaps haunted) Underground Tour was the perfect spark for imagining the many tunnel scenes in Boneshaker. ]]>
