The first three quarters of the book dragged a lot and I had a hard time reading them. My interpretation, which could be totally wrong and off base, is that the narrator sees life as kind of a hopeless bowl that we all get lost in.  A sort of melancholy mess with one certainty: Death.   We are all going to die that is c...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/Wow!%20%20There%20are%20so%20many%20ways%20that%20you%20could%20interpret%20this%20book.%20%20My%20interpretation,%20which%20could%20be%20totally%20wrong%20and%20off%20base,%20is%20that%20the%20narrator%20sees%20life%20as%20kind%20of%20a%20hopeless%20bowl%20that%20we%20all%20get%20lost%20in.%20%20A%20sort%20of%20melancholy%20mess%20with%20one%20certainty:%20Death.%20%20%20We%20are%20all%20going%20to%20die%20that%20is%20certain,%20some%20go%20through%20life%20happily%20and%20merrily%20while%20others%20seem%20bitter,%20angry%20and%20lonely.%20%20In%20my%20interpretation,%20%22ideath%22%20represents%20the%20certainty%20of%20death%20even%20in%20a%20somewhat%20seemingly%20perfect%20communal%20society,%20%22the%20narrator%22%20represents%20the%20melancholy%20and%20hopefulness%20of%20life,%20%22Inboil%22%20represents%20anger%20and%20frustration%20in%20the%20world%20and%20%22Margaret%22%20represents%20hopelessness%20and%20despair%20in%20a%20seemingly%20perfect%20world.%20%20I%20feel%20that%20Brautigan%20had%20a%20special%20meaning%20for%20the%20%22forgotten%20works%22.%20%20To%20me%20it%20represented%20two%20things:%20First;%20the%20worldly%20things%20we%20place%20value%20in%20mean%20nothing%20after%20we%20die,%20they%20have%20lost%20their%20value%20and%20are%20forgotten,%20tossed%20away%20with%20no%20meaning.%20Two;%20it%20represents%20people%20and%20their%20memories%20after%20death%20we%20are%20all%20eventually%20forgotten.%20Brautigan%20also%20mentions%20several%20times%20that%20there%20is%20an%20erected%20statue%20of%20a%20person%20that%20nobody%20remembers%20that%20the%20tigers%20killed.%20%20The%20%E2%80%9Cforgotten%20works%E2%80%9D%20and%20the%20%E2%80%9Cstatue%E2%80%9D%20represent%20the%20lives%20of%20people%20and%20memories%20forgotten,%20junk.%20%20With%20these%20representations%20I%20feel%20that%20Brautigan%20himself%20was%20afraid%20that%20after%20his%20own%20death%20he%20would%20be%20forgotten,%20that%20in%20the%20end%20we%20are%20all%20forgotten.%20%20It%20gives%20question%20to%20that%20old%20adage:%20What%20is%20the%20meaning%20of%20life%20and%20what%20is%20it%E2%80%99s%20purpose.%20%20I%20feel%20that%20Brautigan%20was%20giving%20us%20a%20glimpse%20that%20things%20on%20the%20inside%20are%20not%20always%20as%20they%20appear%20on%20the%20outside.%20%20I%20find%20it%20ironic%20that%20Brautigan%20himself,%20who%20we%20assume%20to%20be%20more%20like%20%E2%80%9Cthe%20narrator%E2%80%9D,%20committed%20suicide%20much%20like%20the%20character%20of%20%22Margaret%22%20just%20a%20few%20years%20after%20publishing%20this%20story.%20%0D%0A%0D%0AI%20found%20this%20story%20very%20thought%20provoking%20and%20I%20am%20still%20thinking%20about%20it%20and%20its%20meaning.%20%20I%20could%20write%20a%20whole%20paper%20on%20this%20book%20and%20what%20it%20represents%20to%20me.%20%20%20%20%0D%0A">more...</a>]]></body>
