Wish I could give this 4-1/2 stars instead of just 4. . .

The short stories in this Pulitzer Prize winner's beautiful collection will haunt you long after you have finished reading them. Lahiri is a remarkable writer who draws you in with incredible character development and priceless prose. Through her characters, all who are of Indian descent but living in America, Lahiri explores the deepest intricacies of the heart as it relates to family relations, marriage, and coming-of-age. Lahiri provides unforgettable reading for those who love a good short story in particular as well as for those who just enjoy great writing in general.

I am a discriminating reader (probably even a book snob) and would not give credit where it is not due (nor would I even take the time to write this review); this woman is truly talented! But if you don't believe me . . . Both New York Times and L.A. Times have listed this book as one of the greatest books of 2008 and rightfully so. It is definitely one of the best books I've picked up this year!

I borrowed this book from a public library, but will definitely be purchasing a copy to add to my personal collection.

As an aside, I also highly recommend Lahiri's debut short story collection Interpreter of Maladies.
It's not necessary. The beginning may seem slow (that never bothers me) as we are thrust into a world that is faraway in time, but real. Historical details never bog down; they are worn lightly, as a reviewer put it.

Reviewers have compared one character here to Sethe from "Beloved;" and though I see the parallel, this is a very different book. Morrison never repeats a book: each is different from the others. Here the setting is the U.S. before it was the U.S. and slavery is presented in all its forms: black, white, natives, indentured Europeans, 'rescued' orphans, those who are needy, etc. Life is difficult, dangerous and arduous for all, yet there are some who manage to make connections to others despite everything. A slim book that contains multitudes.

The sign of a great book for me: I paged back to the beginning as I neared the end (as I approached the ending, I couldn't put it down) and when I was finished, I could've read it all over again. I will one day.(less)

Entertaining although I hate to admit it. A guilty pleasure. Like eating a whole bag of chocolate when you're supposed to be on a MAJOR diet. LOL. I'm usually a book snob, so I'd never recommend this book to ANYONE, but it was an enjoyable, "brain rest" for me. I couldn't put it down - - it was like the Harry Potter of erotica or something. LOL. DEFINITELY NOT FOR THE TIMID!
