I obviously really liked it, as I read the entire thing yesterday (my kids took really long naps and I read all evening). It started out so strong and I was LOVING it; while the characters seemed a bit stock and one-dimensional at first, they quickly fleshed out and I began to care about them. I was thinking of all the people I could recommend this to, such as teachers of U.S. History and Women's Studies, etc. The reason I am not rating it higher was because it started out as an interesting novel about the lives of 4 women intertwined by WWII and how they contributed to the war effort by working in a shipyard (all for different reasons). Toward the end, however, it got extremely Christian. This is the second book that I have grabbed from the "New Releases" that has done this. I am not saying it ruined it for me, but I was just not expecting all of the religious themes to be laid on so heavy at the end. Also, some of the racial issues and whatnot (don't want to give anything away) seemed sort of simplified with some characters' opinions, especially for the time period. Overall, it was really interesting and hard to put down, and it did teach me quite a bit about the war effort and women's roles. Austin has an easy writing style...the women were all different and it was rewarding to see them try to overcome some of their own personal obstacles. (less) "
