This book has inspired me in artistic visions, like all of Murakami's books do. In my opinion he focused more on actual metaphores vs. a realistic story line. If you're a first time Murakami reader, you may get lost in this one. It helps to get warmed up from his shorter stories befor diving into this metaphysical mind-bender!
Kafka's journey was a story that "everyone" can relate to. Murakami chose someone (a typical boy) who is finding his own self. Everyone has thought the way he feels, and lived or living through his experiances. He battles with the "boy named Crow" (his consciousness). And craves motherly affection due to his real mother abandoning him with his selfish uncaring father. This was his biggest obstical over comming this trauma. He finds Mrs. Saeki and trys to create a motherly connection. She's permantley stuck in her past, living dreams of her love who was murdered. Kafka's ultiment challenge was to forgive his real mother for abandoning him, and let go of the pain.
Mr. Nakata had a real surreal story! He's an old man, who has a learning disorder and a special ability to talk to cats. He killed Kafka's father for killing cats, then vanished the town with a truck driver named Hoshino. They team up and travel to different towns and explore different places, for the sake of Mr. Nakata's plans. Mr. Nakata wont stop traveling until he finds where he feels he needs to be, and Hoshino takes him there. After they find the place, Hoshino finds a entry stone in a offering and talks to Colonel Sanders! A great quote by his character is " A very wise conclusion. There's that saying Pointless thinking is worse then no thinking at all!"
Anyway, this is a beautiful book and I loved every sec. reading it. It was hard putting it down, and even worse having to finish it! The discriptions will lure your mind into another world, and inspire you artistically with vivid images. You can actually hear the water hit the Shore! It's most def. one of my favorite books, and I can't wait to read it again. ]]>
