Big disappointment. The historical and social context--Victorian/Edwardian England, Great War, Fabian socialism, Arts & Crafts movement, golden age of children's literature, etc., etc.--is fascinating, and Byatt obviously did tons of research, but it's not well digested or integrated into the text, and the writing is almost comically overblown.
