Dystopian coming of age novel with overtones of The Giver and The Hunger Games. Fast-paced action, a strong female character and large print make this a quick read and provides motivation to read the rest of the series, but not the satisfaction of li...more

Humorous light mystery involving a purloined Egyptian scarab, a love triangle, deceptions, misunderstandings, possible blackmail, and a fitness plan presented in an "Upstairs Downstairs" manner set in an English country home.

Two good things –– the series ends with this book, and the last 50 pages were exciting. Otherwise should have stopped with The Giver. Did not appreciate the rest of the series and would not include them on a list of Lowry's best works.

Continue to be disappointed by this series which doesn't compare to the strength of The Giver. This book barely advances the plot developed in the first two books and poorly merges the elements which they have in common. Rated 2.6* so barely a three.

Bill Bryson
“Not one of your pertinent ancestors was squashed, devoured, drowned, starved, stranded, stuck fast, untimely wounded, or otherwise deflected from its life's quest of delivering a tiny charge of genetic material to the right partner at the right moment in order to perpetuate the only possible sequence of hereditary combinations that could result -- eventually, astoundingly, and all too briefly -- in you.”
Bill Bryson, A Short History of Nearly Everything

Donald Ray Pollock
“When you first heard him talking about it, you'd figure he was batshit crazy, but really, he was just trying to fill up his days so he didn't have to think about what a fucking mess he had made of everything. It's the same for most of us; forgetting our lives might be the best we'll ever do.”
Donald Ray Pollock, Knockemstiff

Cara Black
“The past informs the present. Memory makes the map we carry, no matter how hard we try to erase it.”
Cara Black, Murder in the Bastille

James Clavell
“And Adam ruled, for he was the King. Until the day his will to be King deserted him. Then he died, food for a stronger. And the strongest was always the King, not by strength alone, but King by cunning and luck and strength together. Among the rats.”
James Clavell, King Rat

Charles Lamb
“Of all sound of all bells... most solemn and touching is the peal which rings out the Old Year.”
Charles Lamb
