I see Pirate Latitudes A Novel is for sale at Amazon. I loved Crighton's books when I was younger. , which I read when I was twenty-ish and studying biology at University, Jurassic Park was one of the best books I had ever read. I still feel that way. On the other hand, his more recent books haven't shone so brightly. State of Fear was crappy- I think the science was bad, but the plot and the characters were so idiotic. The action was good, but that isn't the main reason people read Crighton.

Although I am an English as a Foreign Language teacher, this book didn't excite me. It was interesting enough to finish, but not to dig into. I loved A brief history of nearly everything and many other books of his.
If you're in the field and want a quick overview, it's a good book. Otherwise, not so much.

I may be too old for Prince Ombra. I got it at a used book store because I remembered seeing the book thirty or so years ago.
On the other hand, a lot of the story involves the state of the world and fear of nuclear war. That either dates the book too much or requires that the reader has a little more history than your average young reader.
It's the story of an eight year old boy, who is a great hero. Unfortunately, the violence is age-appropriate, or nearly non-existent. good triumphs but not in an exciting way.
