I'm super in love with this book so far (I'm on page 305)...reads all scattered like Kerouac. I love how Bolaño tells a story through all these different characters, each one adding a new dimension and filling in a new perspective on what was going on and who the main characters really are.

I just paused to read David's review of the book and unlike him, I really liked the first 150 pages (even if it took me a second to get into it). Maybe it's because I started reading it in coffee shops around the Vicerealist's old haunts of Roma, Mexico City. Or maybe its because I made a connection with the characters' complete involvement in an endeavor and in creating something (regardless of whether it may have felt frivolous or a sham at times).

This last point about the immaturity of the movement at the time is something that I really enjoy though. Bolaño takes you through a journey where the whole time you're reading (at least until where I'm at), you find yourself trying to figure out whether these guys are for real or just going through a fad in their lives. Through his the interviews or entries from his many characters, he builds a picture that slowly peels off the layers of his the main figures and showing you more and more of who they really are, just as if you were going through the process of getting to know them in real life.

I'm excited to see what comes next.
