Cataract surgery is so much fun! You see all these pretty colors for the 15 minutes or so it takes. I saw pastels, but DH saw primary colors, which seems strange to me. Yuck! Horrible condescending portrayal of black servants by a white women who presumes to know how they thought. Maybe I'll write a book about my Latina housekeepers and tell you everything they think - like I know! They smile at me a lot, so they must be really nice women, right? Saints to be specific, while all of my anglo friends who employ Latina housekeepers are horrible, racist, stupid women with a deep sense of entitlement. Every single one of them! And their husbands, well, the less said about that unpleasant group the better.

The author, of course, is the only enlightened member of this society.

I gave up on this book about half way through. It began well enough - a middle aged professor of classical languages in Switzerland gives it all up one day to go to Portugal and research a writer he's discovered there. That's OK - but then the story is simply him going from one person to the next to get bits and pieces of this writer's story - a structure I found to annoying to continue reading. This rather simple, sentimental story is a surprise to me from Maugham. It's very readable and flows nicely. The story concerns a thoughtless young English girl who marries the wrong man for the wrong reasons, goes to China with him and grows up.
