Thanks to an intriguing NPR review, I'm had a blast reading this excellent novel by Alan Bradley which won the Debut Dagger award from the Crime Writer's Association and is told from the point-of-view of eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, "an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison". Set in 1950's England, the book is funny, sardonic, vividly conjured, and features a darn good mystery, to boot. Even more interesting is the fact that the 70-year-old male author can so wonderfully conjure the inner mechanisms and motivations of a young girl (strange and precocious though she may be). More Flavia books to come!

An excellent mix of the relatively new and the tried-and-true. Nice thing is that while classics such as Le Fanu's 'Carmilla' and 'The Monkey's Paw' by W.W. Jacobs are included, so are some more obscure gems, like 'The South' by Borges, and Julio Cortazar's 'Axolotl'. Interestingly, the stories appear in reverse chronological order, running from Kathe Koja's 'Angel's Moon', all the way back to 'The Vampire' - an episode from 'The Golden Ass' by Apuleis. This 1994 anthology isn't exactly groundbreaking, but seasoned terror-tale aficionados and novices alike will find much to discover, or re-discover, as the case may be.

I really enjoyed The Loved One - even though it was written in 1948, I find that it goes really well with Jessica Mitford's 1963 non-fiction expose The American Way of Death.

Have you seen the 1965 film adaptation, with a script by Terry Southern and an absolutely amazing cast? Doesn't follow the novel too closely, but it's also a riot!
