Searingly painful to read; disturbing to the core. Just when it can't possibly get worse, it does. Thanks Mama. You don't open your mouth to do anything but yell the entire book and you pick THAT story. But the book is short. So it has that going for it. Until you get to the end and you have to read the peripheral character's "stories". I wanted to scream. It felt like a chore to read them. I wanted more Precious. I wanted to read Precious' poetry.

This book serves as an example of why I prefer memoirs. While I would never wish Precious' life on an enemy, I would have been able stomach the rape scenes if Precious were at least a real person and this happened to her. Instead, I kept thinking- this didn't happen to someone, someone THOUGHT this up. And that just may be the sickest part of all.
