Nice review and I agree with what you wrote. I found the writing to be very amateur for a professional author. Choppy, going for the gore factor, it struck me as fan fiction rather than a published book. I also felt the characters were never truly fleshed out, and then to have these monks thrown in with all their weird terms and not giving any idea what they are about? It might have been explained in the first book, but I hadn't read that one. The only reason I finished the book was I had invested time and money into it, and the fact that I hoped it would improve.
