I must admit I had a little trouble getting into the story. I felt a little bogged down with the period details. But then I've read a lot of stories from the Victorian era and don't really need the historical education in the same way a young reader would. I may try another of the series to see if, having already established characters and setting in the first book, the author launches into the plot more quickly.
