i lived for years - grew up in fact - in the Timmins / Cochrane area, and while Moosonee is further north yet, his descriptions evoked many memories for me. the cold that burns, the starkness of winter, the plague of springtime blackflies. the use of 'ever' by the Cree people. (as in 'Ever cold' or 'Ever tippsy me')

i've gone bear watching at the dump! and the college that Dorothy's daughter is enrolling in, is the one i attended. so reading about the often forgotten northern Ontario landscape gave me a lot of pleasure.

much has been written about this book. i'm not going to go into the blah blah blah of the contrast between the New York fashion world drug scene and the northern Native community drug scene. new verus old ways.

i liked the book a great deal, but like many, i think Three Day Road was a stronger story - and it was probably more deserving of the Giller Prize than Through Black Spruce, but they are both great novels and as Boyden is still a young man, hopefully we have many more stories coming our way.

i would like to address Suzanne's disappearance however - just to note that while it wasn't the case here, First Nation women are 5X's more likely to disappear - so thats one 'white' woman, for every 5 First Nations women. and as there is no media coverage, no widespread searches conducted, because of the systemic bias against First Nation people, little attention is paid.

we all point our fingers to the past and say how shameful the residential school system was while we ignore the shamefull situation right under our noses.
