Wow! Not what I expected at all. I'm not normally a sci-fi kind of girl, but this was an interesting read. Not only the premise -- contact through musical presentation, picked up from a remote monitoring station in the Caribbean, by five unlikely friends, a protagonist who is an agnostic Puerto Rican priest fraught with sexual tension, and a time-bending excursion to a planet of beautiful, cannibalistic aliens -- but the way it moved me was totally unexpected. The second book in the series is better ("Children of God"). Warning: there are graphic scenes and copious amounts of questionable language in this book, and it is in no way a "religious" book, but the story IS spiritual, and it's a great read.

I really enjoyed this book, although was not crazy about the "dream" sequence toward the end ... I guess maybe I didn't expect it to be so pivotal? It left me thinking, and really, really enjoyed the parallels between this one and "To Kill a Mockingbird." Absolutely love young protagonists!

Laura ... what was the name of the book we talked about at writing tools ... the short life of someone? Or something like that? I think the writer was Mexican or Cuban or the like.

Claiborne always gives me stuff to think about ... and where I'm at right now, I'm still chewing on a lot he says. Regardless of is someone is a "Christian" or not, it seems like there has to be more to life than mindlessly following your own selfish desires. Worse, someone who is so tied into thinking like the government that whatever Washington says, goes.

My natural "anti-authoritarian" bent makes this book "make" sense to me. I would like to see a lot of Christian leadership read it, and try to integrate what they've been saying for so long into some of Claiborne's questions and ideas. While I'm trying to move away from "arguing" about things that are convictions, I think Shane makes strong points for a reassessment of religion as usual, and gives compelling examples of how to live a life that truly reflects love first.

Lots of good ideas and quotes (he resonates with Gandhi, which makes him OK in my book!!). A good read for anyone sick of "business as usual."
