War: what is it good for?

This is a book that shouldn't be read until you're >40, or at the very least re-read then. Without a little life experience under the belt I can't see how a reader could connect with the moral conundrums presented her

Didn't like its predecessor, The Magicians, so wouldn't have picked it up except I found an ex-library copy knocking around in a free box, and I'm a sucker for a series (probably a control issue, needing to know how it turns out). Pleasantly surprise ...more

Clever combination of memoir (author's) and biography (her father as well as T.H. White), I enjoyed the hell out of this well-written, lyrical ode to goshawks, falconry (or more properly, the art of the austringer), and grief. Exceptional, and the pe ...more

Outstanding combination of bird lore and memoir - loving it even more in hindsight while reading Macdonald's H is for Hawk (Jan2017) because it offers a great deal of context and biography of White and his personality.

“There is nobody in this country who got rich on their own. Nobody. You built a factory out there - good for you. But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory... Now look. You built a factory and it turned into something terrific or a great idea - God bless! Keep a hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”
Elizabeth Warren

“Looking for who I am is who I am.”
