Four years is approximately the amount of time it took for me to find about half of the scientific literature in this book.  Later, if anyone says &quot;But there's no scientific evidence that you can fight cancer naturally!&quot;...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/Please:%20Save%20yourself%20four%20years%20scouring%20Medline%20and%20buy%20this%20book.%20%20Four%20years%20is%20approximately%20the%20amount%20of%20time%20it%20took%20for%20me%20to%20find%20about%20half%20of%20the%20scientific%20literature%20in%20this%20book.%20%20Later,%20if%20anyone%20says%20%22But%20there's%20no%20scientific%20evidence%20that%20you%20can%20fight%20cancer%20naturally!%22%20you'll%20be%20armed%20with%20a%20tome%20of%20evidence%20to%20the%20contrary.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe%20author%20is%20a%20straddler,%20and%20I%20admit%20I'm%20partial%20to%20straddlers.%20%20His%20expertise%20and%20experience%20have%20made%20him%20someone%20who%20comfortably%20straddles%20the%20worlds%20of%20academic%20research,%20the%20medical%20community,%20pharmacological%20research,%20and%20natural%20agents%20that%20fight%20disease.%20%20He%20knows%20enough%20about%20each%20culture%20to%20tell%20readers%20why%20there%20are%20certain%20gaps%20in%20the%20knowledge%20of%20each.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnti%20Cancer%20is%20all%20around%20excellent%20scientific%20writing,%20some%20of%20the%20best%20I've%20read%20this%20year.%20The%20author%20has%20a%20tremendous%20talent%20for%20distilling%20complex%20ideas%20into%20clear,%20concise%20sentences%20and%20reinforcing%20them%20with%20diagrams%20and%20images%20that%20make%20scientific%20points%20clear%20to%20people%20with%20no%20prior%20information%20on%20how%20cells%20work,%20for%20example,%20or%20how%20our%20immune%20systems%20work.%20%20The%20author%20would%20be%20a%20great%20teacher%20(if%20he's%20not%20already).%0D%0A%0D%0AMost%20importantly%20(to%20me),%20Anti%20Cancer%20is%20not%20chock%20full%20of%20pat%20statements%20akin%20to%20%22This%20natural%20thing%20works.%20%20Really!%22%20%20Wholly%20unsubstantiated%20claims%20from%20naturopaths%20disappoint%20me%20no%20less%20than%20deceptive%20statements%20from%20big%20pharma.%20%20I%20need%20the%20why%20and%20the%20how%20of%20something%20in%20order%20to%20believe%20in%20it,%20and%20this%20book%20is%20full%20of%20why%20and%20how.%20%20In%20Anti%20Cancer,%20there%20is%20never%20a%20claim%20that%20something%20works%20without%20an%20immediately%20ensuing%20explanation%20of%20why%20and%20how%20it%20works:%20One%20of%20many%20excellent%20examples%20is%20%22How%20green%20tea,%20and%20specific%20kinds%20of%20green%20tea%20in%20particular,%20stop%20angiogenesis%20in%20tumors%20and%20the%20conditions%20under%20which%20it%20works%20best.%22%20%20%0D%0A%0D%0AIn%20addition,%20I%20am%20pleased%20with%20the%20author's%20comfort%20with%20gray%20areas,%20which%20is%20what%20most%20of%20life's%20more%20complicated%20aspects%20have.%20%20Our%20culture%20(and%20U.S.%20culture%20is%20the%20only%20one%20I%20can%20speak%20to)%20seems%20uncomfortable%20with%20these,%20and%20whole%20segments%20of%20the%20populace%20seem%20to%20want%20the%20comfort%20of%20%22In%20all%20cases,%20THIS%20is%20the%20right%20thing%20to%20do.%22%20%20%0D%0A%0D%0AInstead%20of%20reinforcing%20this,%20the%20author%20explains%20that%20he%20has%20experienced%20and%20still%20advocates%20traditional%20cancer%20treatments,%20and%20he%20is%20also%20comfortable%20with%20stating%20the%20benefits%20of%20natural%20treatments%20of%20cancer%20without%20claiming%20that%20they%20can%20cure%20cancer%20completely.%20%20The%20author%20is%20comfortable%20stating%20the%20problems%20with%20processed%20food%20and%20meat%20while%20also%20acknowledging%20studies%20that%20show%20that%20the%20type%20of%20meat%20(grass%20fed%20vs.%20not,%20for%20instance)%20makes%20a%20difference.%20%20Claims%20like%20this%20may%20disappoint%20more%20hardcore%20vegan%20readers.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhich%20brings%20me%20to%20my%20last%20accolade:%20The%20author%20is%20comfortable%20and%20honest%20about%20the%20limitations%20of%20knowledge,%20while%20also%20stating%20what%20is%20known%20and%20not%20shying%20away%20from%20that%20gap.%20%20He%20does%20not%20tend%20toward%20extremism%20or%20what%20I'm%20starting%20to%20call%20the%20militant%20religiosity%20of%20certain%20beliefs,%20which%20we%20see%20in%20regard%20to%20organic%20vs.%20GMO%20food;%20natural%20childbirth%20vs.%20hospital%20birth;%20immunization%20benefits%20vs.%20drawbacks;%20and%20all%20sorts%20of%20other%20aspects%20of%20daily%20life.%20%20This%20is%20a%20welcome%20relief%20from%20the%20usual%20level%20of%20discourse%20that%20posits%20things%20in%20either-or%20relationships%20vs.%20%22both%22%20and%20%22maybe%22%20and%20%22sometimes.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AEveryone%20can%20benefit%20from%20reading%20this%20book.%20%20At%20the%20very%20least,%20you'll%20learn%20how%20your%20immune%20system%20works%20and%20how%20to%20strengthen%20it%20to%20fight%20not%20just%20cancer,%20but%20many%20diseases.">more...</a>]]></body>

          <body><![CDATA[I stayed up until 5:00 AM on my honeymoon to finish this.  I haven't stayed up all night to read a book since early 2007.  That's just how riveting and compelling and profoundly disturbing and terrifying it is.
