I was told this series is like "Twilight" for grown-ups. I have to disagree. It was ok. Sookie, the main character, is fairly entertaining, though her internal dialogue is a littel contrived. The rest of the characters are about the same. The "action" seems to come out of nowhere and the plot moves in stops and starts. The writing is mediocre. I think a better summarizing phrase would be "Nora Roberts meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer." I would bet that the HBO series "True Blood" is actually better than the books.

This book is not going to win a Pulitzer prize, but it doesn't really need to because of it's wild popularity. I think of this book like the dessert you know you aren't supposed to eat. It's not good for you, you don't really need it, but you can't resist. It's bad, but it's gooooood.

I admire the author's restraint and cleverness. Her writing is descriptive enough to spark the imagination, but sparse enough to keep it going. I see the story as a clever re-write of Romeo and Juliet...no wonder it is so popular!

This book was horrible. As a former high school English teacher, I love great YA books. The greatest do not underestimate the intelligence of their audience. This does. The plot is rediculously drawn out and insubstantial, the premise boring, and the characters are totally underdeveloped. The most amazing thing about this book is the author's ability to write so much about so little.
