One of a few books that I care to finish once I start reading. The (real life) stories are compelling, the storytelling is more than adequate - it's Linda's strength, actually - though her writing style reminds me a lot to Ayu Utami.
The book is actually a compilation of Linda's articles in various publications. The main theme is her personal experience, because they practically covers a lot of issues: from the 'wartawan bodrex' phenomenon, to Wiji Thukul (bless his soul), to the shariah law in Aceh, all written in blunt words. Linda doesn't even try to create nicknames or initials of the journalists whose stories has been chosen as examples of the "envelope phenomenon". I'm not a journalist, so I can't comment on any etiquette matter here. I suppose the subjects have been notified about this in advance.
One story, "Batalion Terakhir", grab my attention for the way Linda describes her encounter with a group of (low rank) army officers. Given her political background, one will expect a picture of harsh brats. On the contrary, the military people were portrayed from a sympathetic angle.
Despite a few disturbing things, I must say the book is inspiring.

I give this book two stars for its terrible editing. I do not care much for the four supposed members of the research team who made a joint statement following the polemics upon the book, saying they were not involved (hence, cannot be held responsible) in the final conclusion of the research. After all, they never said the findings presented in the book were modified (modified is NOT the same with manipulated).
Having read numerous writings (particularly, in Multiply) on Islamic fundamentalist movement, written by those engaging the movement, I dare say at least 80% of the book content does reflect the actual situation in Indonesia. ]]>

I notice that those who say they hate the book, they hate it because of the ending. Or because of the mother's character. These, to me, only highlight the strength of the book: characters that are often inexplicable (mothers who play favorite? It sucks, but they exist), plot that actually reflects real life, and yeah... bad ending too. Cliche it is not.
I also like the way the book is written, with each character explored in first-person notes. Hadn't I known the book was fictional, I would've assumed it was a biography.
I may not want to read this book again. Not because it's bad, but because it is too painful for me to bear. ]]>
This is my first time reading a non-fiction Romo Mangun's book. Despite being thin, the book is rich with his experiences, and it gives you a hint on how he wrote his novels. For instance, I suspect that Lusi -- a member of his church whose marriage to a former priest novice he served -- is the model for Larasati, one of the main characters in "Burung-burung Manyar".
This book revolves around his work as a Catholic priest, but any open minded person, regardless of the background, will enjoy the book nonetheless. ]]>
