I love this book. Horses. 1920-1930s. Horses. Hillenbrand does an excellent job blending cultural events with a history of horse-racing. The people come to life on the page and I couldn't help but cheer each time Seabiscuit drove for the wire. An absolute must-read for horse-lovers or anyone who enjoys studying the time period.

This has been my favorite Poirot novel to date. Many catches and suspects, a growing plot, a Poirot who at time doubts himself, and a very satisfying ending. Sublime.

This has to be the only book series that I've ever read out of order. But it doesn't seem to lessen my enjoyment. Bryant has to be one of my all time favorite detectives and May is a fascinating partner to follow, too. This novel kept me guessing the entire time and the solution to the mystery was far more involved than I would have expected. The ending seemed to keeping on going for a while, with all the ends to tie up (and the Whitstables really need to be tied up--and thown away), but I was pleased with the outcome. A very good read.

Sorry to say this book isn't my cuppa. I tried to like it, but the narrator was self-absorbed and not the sort of person I root for in the book. Add to that the death of two characters, orphaning their twin babies, and another character having a late miscarriage, and I couldn't get out of the book fast enough. I'd blame pregnancy hormones, but honestly, I wouldn't have enjoyed this book if I weren't expecting.

At least there was a somewhat possible maybe happy ending in sight at the end, but only just.

The premise of this book was fascinating--modern gal wakes up in 1600s England and must learn to cope. But the story never picked up for me. The character kept on about why she was there, how it had happened, what she would do, and basically 'thought' herself, and me, into circles. When the 'thought-ing' never let up, I gave up.

Plot, not thought, makes a book for me.

I tried to read this novel. Really, I did. I loved the movie and enjoyed watching an old interview with the author.

But the book never clicked with me. And it was long . . . too long for it not to be clicking. I got maybe halfway through and had it sitting on my nightstand for over a year before I gave up and passed the book along to a friend to give it a try.
